New Year, Same Bad Poll Numbers For Biden

Leer en Español

President Biden enters the second year of his tenure probably looking to drastically change the course of his presidency before this year’s midterms, where his Democratic Party will be defending razor-thin majorities in both Houses of Congress. However, even if the calendars now show a new year, poll numbers for the president keep showing same gloomy picture.

A new CNBC/Change research poll shows that 56% of Americans disapprove of the way Biden is handling his job while only 44% of Americans approve of his performance. CNBC is not the only poll showing the president in the ropes, as an Economist/ YouGov poll has him polling at just 40% approval among respondents, while 50% of surveyed think he is doing a bad job.

The president’s political position is weak on all fronts, as voters also dislike the way Biden is handling the specific issues. Both polls are showing Americans very skeptical of Biden’s management of the economy, the COVID pandemic, national security, and fiscal issues.

The president tanking approval numbers on the economy

The CNBC poll has 60% of the respondents disapproving of Biden’s economic approach, an extremely bad omen for any public official who wants to remain a viable politician. The panorama is even worst when people are asked about the president’s work on inflation (where 72% disapprove of his job) and how he is working to improve their personal finances, where 66% disapprove. The YouGov poll also shows that just a minority of voters approve of Biden’s job on the jobs and the economy, as only 38% of them support his policies in the economy.

Voters are also pessimistic about the economy in general, as the YouGov/The Economist poll shows that only 24% think the economy is in either good or excellent shape. Most tellingly, 45% of those surveyed said that the economy in their area did either somewhat worse or much worse in 2021 than in 2020, and 52% think the same of the national economy. The worst omen for Biden is that a significant plurality of Americans (48%) think the economy will do worse in the near future.

Biden loses ground in all issues and voters view him as a weak leader

The president is also losing support in what was one of his strongest points during the first half of 2020, as 55% of Americans think he is not doing a good job handling the COVID pandemic, a significant decrease from last April when the President was polling at 62% approval ratings on his response to the pandemic.

Americans aren’t very supportive of the way Biden is handling national security issues, or how he deals with taxes and government spending. The You/Gov poll shows that only 36% support the way he is handling issues of National Security and only 33% approve of his approach towards taxes and government spending.

Additionally, voters are also giving very low marks to Biden’s political abilities and personal characteristics. 50% think the president does not care very much about the needs of the people,  62% do not think he is a trustworthy leader, 50% feel uneasy to Biden’s approach towards an international crisis, and (mots devastatingly) 60% of those surveyed by the YouGov poll think he is a weak leader.

President Biden took office promising a return to normalcy after the controversial presidency of Donald Trump; however, after a year of crisis both at home and abroad it seems that the American people are souring on their 46th president. If Democrats want to avoid a bloodbath in this year’s midterms, then Biden will have to improve his numbers very quickly.
