One hundred million Americans over the age of 16 are now fully vaccinated against covid-19, President Joe Biden’s administration’s pandemic response team reported Friday.

“That’s 100 million Americans with a sense of relief and peace of mind, knowing that after a long, hard year they are protected against the virus,” said Jeff Zients, the White House covid-19 response coordinator, at a press conference.

In total, more than 230 million doses of some of the available vaccines – those from Moderna and Pfizer, which require two shots, and Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine – have been administered in the country so far, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.

In the last week, the average daily number of doses administered was 2.6 million, which is expected to meet Biden’s promise to have enough vaccine available for all Americans by the end of May.

Although the number of daily infections has declined in recent weeks, the United States remains the country most affected by the covid-19 pandemic in the world, with more than 575,000 deaths and 32 million confirmed cases.
