Nearly half of Americans over the age of 18 are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, while the number of daily infections and deaths continues to decline in the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Friday.
48.4% (124 million) of adults are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and 60.5% (156 million) have received at least one dose of the available vaccines.
Also, the number of daily infections fell to 27,857 on Thursday, the lowest since June of last year, and the number of deaths from covid yesterday stood at 497, the lowest in more than a year.
“These data give me hope,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky remarked at a press conference.
The improvement in the pandemic situation in the United States has allowed health authorities to signal last week that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks outdoors and indoors.
Walensky reiterated that the recommendation is based on the latest scientific studies.
The goal set by President Joe Biden is to have 70% of adults vaccinated in the country by July 4, the date on which Independence Day is celebrated in the United States.
