In May 2019, 132,856 people irregularly crossed the border from Mexico and were apprehended by U.S. immigration authorities, of which 11,475 were unaccompanied minors.

It did not transcend, however, at the time how many minors were or remained in the custody of the Trump administration.

Citing CBP figures, officials today noted that as of February, some 29,000 unaccompanied minors had been detained in the current fiscal year, which began in October 2020.

“There is no question that the current flows have created challenges for DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and HHS,” officials admitted.

In that context, they detailed that last February approximately 100,000 undocumented persons attempted to enter U.S. territory, which was a 28% increase over January.

The spokespersons pointed out that under Title 42, which allows for the expedited removal of irregular immigrants to prevent the spread of the pandemic, both single adults and family groups are being returned to Mexico.

The officials also indicated that the Biden administration opened other detention centers for unaccompanied immigrant minors in the city of Midland and another in Dallas, both in the state of Texas.

Republican congressmen and former President Trump himself have described the situation on the border with Mexico as a crisis that they have blamed on the policies of Biden, who has dismantled many of the measures of his predecessor, which has led to the arrival of more immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Biden administration opened another detention center for unaccompanied immigrant minors in the city of Midland and another in Dallas.

More than 14,000 immigrant minors who crossed the border into Mexico alone remain in the custody of U.S. government agencies, officials from President Joe Biden’s administration admitted on Thursday.

In a telephone call with reporters, the officials indicated that 9,562 children remain in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and another 4,500 are in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which is in charge of the Border Patrol.

Officials declined to call the situation of immigrant children at the border a “national crisis” and defended that the numbers “rise and fall all the time.”
