A news report revealed that 246 Michigan residents who received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine tested positive for the virus and only 3 of them died.

According to the Detroit News, the cases occurred between January 1 and March 31 and were infected two weeks after receiving both doses of the vaccine.

Lynn Sutfin, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Human Services, reported that of 117 cases that went to a hospital, only 11 were admitted.

She further explained that the three people who died were 65 years of age or older, and two “all persons 65 years or older, and two of which were within three weeks of completion of vaccination.”

“While the majority of the population develops full immunity within 14 days of completion of their vaccine series, a small proportion appear to take longer to mount a full antibody response. CDC is actively working to better understand the risk characteristics of this group” Sutfin added.

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) retracted statements made by its director Rochelle Walensky, who said that vaccinated people cannot contract or transmit the virus.

What is known so far is that the vaccine reduces the risk of serious or fatal infection. The vaccine reduces the symptoms and would be saving the lives of people already immunized. This does not mean that there is no margin of error or, failing that, that there are no exceptions.

Something similar happened with chickenpox. The chickenpox vaccine does not prevent people from catching the disease, but it reduces the symptoms and reduces the severity.

Why do vaccinated people get COVID-19?

To clarify in detail the effectiveness and importance of the application of vaccines against COVID-19, El American interviewed Dr. Jesus Anampa, associate professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, United States.

The specialist explained that the more people are vaccinated, the greater the population immunity, which directly influences the reduction of infections and deaths:

“One person can infect several people. So the more people are vaccinated, the more they will protect themselves and also protect the unvaccinated because there is less virus density in the community. The goal is for 70% of the population to be vaccinated”.

Anampa explained that perhaps what is happening with people who tested positive after having been vaccinated is because their organism does not produce the proteins or antibodies to fight the virus, or because they were infected at a time when the antidotes were not yet effective.

“Vaccinated people can become infected for several reasons: when the body does not produce the proteins that counteract the virus or because the vaccines take time to take effect and create antibodies. The Pfizer vaccine, for example, begins to take effect 12 days after receiving the second dose; and obviously during this “waiting” period a person can become infected,” he pointed out.

The specialist added that the “new normal” is expected to arrive in the United States by July. However, he recalled that there will be measures that will be maintained indefinitely.

“I think the normality is going to be a new normal. The biggest changes are going to be more frequent hand washing and masks will be in place for a while longer. It is expected that by July, all adults in the United States will be vaccinated,” he stated.
