This Friday, the US government sanctioned 34 new companies both for facilitating exports between Russia and Iran and for allegedly collaborating with abuses against the Uyghur Muslim minority in China. This was made public by the Department of Commerce in a statement.

The measure prohibits American companies from exporting or transferring goods to organizations on the Commerce Department’s Entity List.

“These thirty-four entities have been determined by the U.S. Government to be acting contrary to the foreign policy interests of the United States and will be listed on the Entity List under the destinations of Canada; People’s Republic of China (China); Iran; Lebanon; Netherlands (The Netherlands); Pakistan; Russia; Singapore; South Korea; Taiwan; Turkey; the United Arab Emirates (UAE); and the United Kingdom.,” the statement reads.

Of the sanctioned companies, 14 are complicit “in Beijing’s campaign of repression, mass detention and state-of-the-art surveillance of Uighurs, Kazakhs and members of other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang.”

In addition, the U.S. sanctioned 5 other companies without specifying their headquarters and which allegedly help China to “modernize” its military capabilities thanks to the purchase of lasers and other technologies.

Another 8 companies were included for “facilitating the export of American goods to Iran” in violation of U.S. sanctions against Tehran and 7 more companies were included for their ties with Russia, 6 of them for allegedly helping Moscow to obtain electronic components of American origin “probably to enhance Russian military programs”.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in the statement that it will continue to “use export controls to hold accountable governments, companies, and individuals who attempt to access U.S.-origin goods for subversive activities in countries such as China, Russia, and Iran.”
