Five Honduran children were found by border agents in the Del Rio, Texas, after allegedly crossing the border without their parents or other immigrants. They were carrying handwritten notes with the phone numbers of their relatives in the United States and their birth certificates.
This was reported Thursday by the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in a statement, which also detailed that the children were discovered on Wednesday.
The officers first found 27 immigrants who entered the country irregularly, among them three little ones: a five-year-old girl who was taking care of her one-year-old cousin and a five-year-old boy who was traveling alone.
“The children had handwritten notes with the phone numbers of their relatives in the United States. One child had a copy of his birth certificate,” CBP detailed.
The children, aged 9 and 7, of Honduran nationality, will be “processed in accordance” with Customs and Border Protection policies.
This Thursday it was learned that the U.S. government sheltered more than 122,000 minors who arrived unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian in fiscal 2021, an unprecedented number.
According to CBS, those minors were transferred to the care of the Department of Health.
The release detailed that some 147,000 minors under 18 years of age arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in the fiscal period that began on October 1, 2020 and ended last September 30.
