DeSantis Exposes Progressive Hypocrisy by Sending Immigrants to the Exclusive Martha’s Vineyard Island

Leer en Español

Martha’s Vineyard has been the topic of the national conversation over the past couple of days. National media, both conservative and liberal, analyzed in detail Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ sending of immigrants to the wealthy Massachusetts island, whose residents couldn’t even stand 24 hours with just over fifty migrants —mostly Venezuelans— strolling the exclusive streets of their town.

The progressive authorities of Martha’s Vineyard —who last year said that their town would be happy to receive migrants because they assured that no person was “illegal”—  made a political fuss and a big deal about a small flight of about fifty migrants from Florida, which represented for them a “humanitarian crisis.” A statement that provoked mockery on social media and criticism against the island’s authorities.

One particularly ironic statement was that of Lisa Belcastro, coordinator of the Harbor Homes homeless shelter on Martha’s Vineyard, who claimed that those few dozen immigrants sent to the island collapsed all services in her town.

“The difficult challenges are, we have, at some point in time, they have to move from here to somewhere else,” Belcastro told the media. “We cannot, we don’t have the services to take care of 50 immigrants,” she continued, “and we certainly don’t have housing. We’re in a housing crisis as we are on this island. And we don’t, we can’t house everyone here that lives here and work here. We don’t have housing for 50 more people.”

Last year, however, County Commissioner Keith Chatinover told the local MV Times that Senator Ted Cruz had no idea what an “immigration crisis” was and that Martha’s Vineyard would be happy to welcome migrants crossing the border because they help the United States.

“I would love Martha’s Vineyard to become a haven for new immigrants to this country, but Senator Cruz has no idea what he’s talking about regarding a ‘border crisis,'” Chatinover said. “Immigrants make our country stronger (as evidenced by immigration from Brazil and other countries to the Vineyard), and he is trying to whip up racial anxieties for political gain, which is essentially the entire GOP platform anyhow.”

Now, it is easier said than done. The flight of the migrants exposed the racism and hypocrisy of progressives. After nearly 24 hours with fifty migrants “crowding” the streets of Martha’s Vineyard, residents and authorities could not resist, and decided to send these people —whom they promised to welcome with open arms earlier— to a military base located on the touristic Cape Cod, a cape on the Massachusetts mainland.

In reality, despite voting for authorities who clamor for open borders by encouraging illegal migration, Martha’s Vineyard residents do not like to deal with immigrants. This was fully reflected in a report by Telemundo correspondent Cristina Londoño Rooney, who stated on camera that there was “an angry man” because “his children had to leave this island because there is no work or housing and now they are bringing these migrants here deceiving them with these promises.”

“There are also other people blaming the Biden administration, they don’t want the immigrants here, but they also don’t want to speak on camera because they don’t want to be labeled as inhumane,” Londoño Rooney reported.

However, the hegemonic media and the Democrats could not let the Martha’s Vineyard community be seen as non-inclusive for not accepting immigrants to be included in the social dynamics of the town and decided to bombard social media with propaganda. For example, CNN en Español published several tweets highlighting the nobility of island residents who began helping immigrants with food and donations.

Or the videos of “emotional goodbyes” that the charitable citizens of Martha’s Vineyard gave the immigrants before they left town. A very humane way to treat them: invite them to the U.S. to migrate in search of new opportunities and then tell them they have no room for them and send them to a military base to see how to deal with them.

Martha’s Vineyard embarrassed the Democrats

After sending these migrants to Massachusetts, Governor DeSantis found himself caught in a crossfire initiated by progressives who began criticizing him for allegedly treating these people in an “inhumane” and “cruel” manner.

One of the Democratic officials who spoke out was California Governor Gavin Newson, who asked the DOJ to analyze and investigate whether the removal of immigrants by Governors DeSantis and Abbott as violated federal laws related to “kidnapping.”

However, in October 2021, the New York Post revealed that the Biden administration was moving migrants from Texas to New York on secret flights in a move to precisely alleviate the border crisis and large migration flow caused in large part by the current administration’s open borders rhetoric.

Where are the Democrats’ pronouncements against President Biden for moving immigrants across state lines, was that also a “cruel” and “inhumane” act, as White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this past September 15?

In January this year, El American reported that former White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki confirmed that the Biden administration was stealthily deporting Venezuelans in another attempt to combat the migration crisis. At least, at the time, there was criticism of the administration for this controversial measure from within the Democratic Party itself, as the administration was deporting Venezuelans to different countries, because it could not deport them to their country of origin.

For example, at the time, Democratic Senator Bob Menendez issued a statement asserting that Biden was turning his back on Venezuelan migrants: “Under Maduro’s cruel regime, Venezuelans who are sent back face a grim future and, in many cases, harsh consequences for seeking political asylum in the United States.”

However, the Democratic voices that today criticize DeSantis and Abbott for sending migrants to Democratic “sanctuary” cities, seeking to call the attention of the federal government to do its job of securing the border and resolving the immigration crisis that continues to worsen, today forget that the Biden administration has been carrying out these inter-state transfers.

Two buses with migrants from South and Central America were sent by the governor of Texas to Washington DC to Kamala Harris’ residence (EFE).

If Martha’s Vineyard was overwhelmed by a few dozen immigrants, what will be left for border cities —such as Del Rio or Yuma— that receive thousands of migrants daily?

At the end of the day, what Abbott and DeSantis did is nothing more than to send a dose of reality to the Democratic authorities in Washington DC, New York, and Massachusetts so that they can get a sense of what it is like to deal with the illegal migration that they themselves drive. Since Kamala Harris did not go to see the immigrants at the border, the migrants did go to see her at her residence in the capital.
