In the midst of a migration crisis and on the verge of breaking a record number of immigrants, the United States is preparing to receive a new caravan with hundreds of people who aspire to reach U.S. territory.

Joe Biden’s administration, which since taking office has not been able to control the situation at the border, will now have to face another wave of migrants, which will test the Democratic administration’s crisis management.

News agencies reported that only on Monday, March 29, at least a hundred people began to gather in northern Honduras with the purpose of creating a caravan to leave together to the United States.

The call of these migrants was made through social networks and although it is unknown who originated the caravans, it is certain that they are already on their way to the U.S.

Guatemala announced a state of prevention in five departments of the country to try to contain the possible arrival of the caravan.

The decree adds that the arrival of the caravan “would generate a citizen security crisis if it enters the country or circulates within it, aggravating the related epidemiological health emergency.”

This new exodus comes at a time when the United States is trying to solve an agglomeration of nearly 14,000 unaccompanied minors who arrived from Central America.

Although the France 24 news agency reported this Wednesday, March 31, that the caravan disbanded in Guatemala, U.S. authorities already have alarming forecasts about the number of immigrants arriving this fiscal year at the country’s border.

This Monday, March 29, The Washington Post and Axios revealed that Biden is preparing for a “next phase of a migration surge” that could be the largest in the last two decades.

A new estimate of the number of migrants arriving in the United States by May is between 22,000 and 25,000.

The report points out that only 10 to 20% of the families are returned to Mexico. The rest are usually released in the United States with a notice to appear in court.

IncreaSeverity of Migration Crisis: southern border is overflowing with abandoned children

As of February, 14,000 children have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border unaccompanied and are now in the custody of government agencies. Of these, 9,562 remain in the care of the Department of Health, while 4,500 are in the custody of Customs and Border Protection.

An ABC News report revealed that despite health and safety regulations due to the coronavirus pandemic, “more than 4,000 migrants, many of them children, were crammed into Texas facilities.”

Oscar Escamilla, acting executive officer of the U.S. Border Patrol in the Rio Grande Valley, told the media that between 250 and 300 children enter the country daily.

A lack of bed space at facilities overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) led to a record backlog of unaccompanied children stranded at Border Patrol facilities, which are unfit to house minors for extended periods of time. As of Tuesday morning, the Border Patrol was holding more than 5,100 unaccompanied minors.

Border facility no longer has the capacity to hold the press

For the first time, this Tuesday, March 30, the Democratic administration allowed the press into a Border Patrol facility. According to CBS News, the tent is so overcrowded that it houses 16 times more migrants than its capacity.

“Pods designed to accommodate 32 children were acutely overcrowded, with one housing more than 600 unaccompanied teenagers. Children in one of the pods stood shoulder-to-shoulder, waiting to collect drink pouches and cheese crackers. Social distancing could not be enforced,” the CBS report explains.
