After Saying She Would Welcome Illegal Migrants, Lightfoot Accuses Abbott of 'Manufacturing a Crisis'

A NEW busload of illegal migrants arrived in Chicago after Texas Governor Greg Abbott made it easier for them to travel to sanctuary cities; now the Democratic mayor of that city who has said she welcomes the migrants criticized Abbott for “fabricating a human crisis.”

Lori Lightfoot said that while she welcomes the new residents, she is frustrated with Abbott: “My frustration comes from the actions of the governor of Texas”, she said.

“There could be a level of coordination and cooperation, but he chooses to do none of those things. Instead, he chooses to send human beings across the country to an uncertain destination. That’s unacceptable. He is manufacturing a human crisis and it makes no sense to me,” the mayor added.

When the first two buses of migrants arrived Lightfoot said the city would help them find shelter, jobs and schools.

We are a welcoming city. We are always going to step up and do the right thing to make sure that migrants coming into our city are well received, that they’re supported,”  she said.

Lightfoot announced the launch of a donation page for migrants in response to the arrivals. The page asks for basic necessities such as clothing, shoes, diapers and blankets. It also asks willing participants to sign up to volunteer to help with donations.

We have people coming as families, young children with their first taste of democracy and freedom in many instances and we need to make sure that the memory that they have of Chicago and of the United States is favorable”, Lightfoot said. “Regardless of where their life journey takes them, I want them to feel like in this moment that they came to this city, and we wrapped our arms around them, loved them and supported them.

Last week Chicago’s mayor claimed it is “racist,” for Texas to bus illegal migrants to her city.

Greg Abbott responds to Chicago’s mayor

Nearly 10,000 immigrants, according to Texas government figures, have been bused by the Republican governor of Texas to progressive cities like Washington, New York and now Chicago.

Mayor Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them “, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott responded in a statement last week.

Texas’ governor began sending migrants out of his state to liberal cities like Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C., because these are “sanctuary” cities that in theory should be willing to receive them. However, the mayors of these cities are already talking about a crisis and are asking for federal funds.

Texas receives at least 4,000 illegal migrants daily without Joe Biden’s administration taking measures to address the crisis. Abbott’s decision to send migrants to Washington DC and sanctuary cities is a move to draw attention to the seriousness of what is happening at the southern border.

President Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans—and Americans—at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” Governor Abbott said.

To continue providing much-needed relief to our small, overrun border towns, Chicago will join fellow sanctuary cities Washington, D.C. and New York City as an additional drop-off location,” he concluded.
