Al-Qaeda could rebuild inside Afghanistan within a year or two. This was stated by U.S. intelligence officials on Tuesday. In addition, the experts noted that some members of the terrorist group had already returned to the country.
According to The New York Times, although the Taliban pledged in the February 2020 peace agreement with the United States not to allow Afghanistan to be used by terrorist groups, analysts say those promises do not seem very serious.
Similarly, David S. Cohen, deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), told the media that the challenge will be to uncover the terrorists’ planning before they execute it. In this sense, he explained that the CIA is keeping an eye on the groups.
In addition, Osama bin Laden’s former security chief, Amin al-Haq, who served with bin Laden during the Battle of Tora Bora, was seen on video returning to Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province last August.
Al-Qaeda’s celebration and experts’ concern
Already earlier this month, several experts had expressed concern that the Taliban would not honor the agreement with the U.S. on terrorists. “Experts are concerned that the Taliban leadership will not honor assurances not to allow Al-Qaeda to plot against the United States after the American withdrawal,” The Telegraph noted.
The information came after the Al-Qaeda group celebrated the Taliban takeover of Afghan territory. The group called the end of the American presence in Afghanistan after a 20-year mission a “historic victory.”
