More than 353,000 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the United States since January 1 of this year. This brings the death toll from the disease to 705,000 Americans.

The figures are according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering, as reported by ABC. Similarly, only 65.6% of citizens over the age of 12 are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Increase in cases of COVID-19 despite vaccination

Despite the nationwide vaccination drive, coronavirus cases have been on the rise. This is due to the emergence of new variants, such as Delta, which have allowed the virus to spread more rapidly.

The CDC explains that “new variants of the virus are circulating in the United States and other parts of the world”. However, it highlights that COVID-19 vaccines licensed for use in the United States offer protection against most variants.

“Evidence is limited on how the new COVID-19 variants will affect how COVID-19 vaccines work in real-world conditions. CDC will continue to monitor how vaccines are working to see if variants have any impact on how well COVID-19 vaccines work in real-world conditions,” the centers say.
