Americans Must Strengthen Their Patriotism amid Progressive Attacks on Their Symbols and History

Anti-Americanism is on the rise. Over the last few years, the public debate in the country has changed. There is little talk in the chambers of Congress and in the mainstream media about the greatness of the nation, its beneficence in third countries, or even tangible and real problems for the population, such as the current runaway inflation, the growing insecurity or the constant displays of disconnection with reality on the part of President Joe Biden.

Now the public debate revolves around the notion that the country is unjust, racist, cruel, and this has been exploited by the American left to transform this narrative into a battle horse with which to attack not only the capitalist system, but also the nation’s patriotism. A recent survey by Issues & Insights and Tippinsights reveals that 64% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 are not proud of their country.

According to progressive media and some leftist activists, the American flag no longer represents them, in fact, recently The New York Times published a strongly criticized article in which they implied that the patriotic symbol might not represent the whole nation, which in a way holds some certainty: liberals, Democrats, the left in general, has ceased to have respect for the symbols and history of the United States.

The latest public display of contempt for the country and its symbols, beyond the constant political debates in which attempts are made to destroy America’s legacy, was made by Olympic athlete Gwen Berry, when she disparaged The Star-Spangled Banner and the American flag after placing third in the pre-Olympic competitions.

Berry, instead of honorably receiving the position to represent the United States in the world’s most important sporting competition, pulled out a flannel with the phrase “activist athlete” on it and said the patriotic symbols did not represent her.

However, beyond Berry’s words, the most disturbing thing was that the U.S. President’s office said they “respect” the progressive activist’s demonstration, legitimizing the contempt for the flag and the national anthem.

Race and identity politics as a strategy to destroy national identity

Critical race theory has been one of the effective manuals of ideologization and segregation promoted by the American left to promote hatred towards the United States. Schools today, far from talking about patriotic heroes and the obstacles that the country had to go through to become the most successful nation, not only in the West, but also in the entire world, are discussing the idea that the nation is systematically racist and unjust. There is a new generation that is unaware of the greatness of their own country, and instead are growing up with the idea that they live in an oppressive, illiberal and deeply unfair nation.

Those who promote this anti-American vision are the same people who have been benefiting from political segregation: they segment voters and promote the classification of minority groups to proclaim narratives of victimization.

The left have managed to separate the country into groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Cuban Americans, and so on. They have done the same now with sexual tendencies with which they have created a score of identification labels: pansexual, homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual, transsexual, demisexual, among others. Every “minority” group has in turn its exploitative nemesis, in the racial section it is the white man, or as the American left has classified him “the white supremacist”, and in the case of sexuality the oppressor is the heterosexual man.

Curiously the “defenders” of minorities have never thought of promoting unitary policies to end polarization and hatred, instead of calling for the elimination of minority surnames (i.e., that we stop referring to blacks as “African Americans,” and simply call them “American”). They continue to hand out labels and implement policies that instead of uniting erect greater barriers between different demographic groups.

This is also happening with the new political struggle based on sexuality, where instead of calling for and pushing for a public debate to normalize any sexual tendency, they launch more labels and campaigns to segregate the population.

All of this of course is done for very clear purposes: to create victims, to divide the country between oppressors and oppressed, to push the notion that only a large and robust state can solve “inequalities”, and also to divert attention from the really important public debates, those where the current Democratic administration is failing big time -economics, security, immigration- and to prioritize issues with which they can continue to manipulate the population to dominate the spheres of power.

Anti-patriotism in schools

In an interview in the 1980s, former Soviet KGB agent Yuri Bezmenov declared that the United States was experiencing psychological warfare aimed at destroying the foundations of the American system. According to him, what was being sought was “to change the perception of reality of every American that despite of the abundance of information no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interest of defending themselves, their families, their community, and their country.”

On psychological warfare Bezmenov expanded after escaping from the Soviet communist paradise:

“It’s a great brainwashing process which goes very slow and is divided into four basic stages. The first stage being ‘demoralization’. It takes from 15 to 20 years to demoralize a nation. Why that many years? Because this is the minimum number of years required to educate one generation of students in the country of your enemy exposed to the ideology of [their] enemy. In other words, Marxism-Leninism ideology is being pumped into the soft heads of at least 3 generations of American students without being challenged or counterbalanced by the basic values of Americanism; American patriotism.”

Today there is no doubt that anti-American messages, commentary, and narratives spread more strongly within the United States than even outside its lands. The ideological spectrum that is born in the center and expands to the left seems to hate the country that has welcomed millions of immigrants who every year leave their countries, those really failed and totalitarian ones, to come to America and achieve a dignified life, with opportunities and freedoms.

America is obviously not a perfect country, systemic racism existed, slavery also existed, but it was precisely a majority of good men and women who fought to defeat the racists of the past and create a system that provides freedoms to each and every American. If America was really as unjust, cruel, and oppressive as progressives claim it is, millions of people would not flee their homes and risk their lives to get there.

Faced with the disqualifications and lies of progressives, conservatives should stand up to transmit patriotic values in the country’s schools, highlight the legacy of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, and explain how and why the Stars and Stripes flag is so important, the one that today a part of the country far from displaying with pride, seems to want to bury.
