After a landslide victory over Charlie Crist that allowed him to secure another four years as governor of Florida, speculation about Ron DeSantis was endless. The Republican is one of the strong names for 2024 and, despite not giving many signs about it, the release of his autobiography is the ultimate flirtation with presidential ambitions.

In February 2023, his second book, titled The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival, will be released. Within hours of the announcement, it is already the top seller in Amazon’s “state and local government” category.

It is an autobiography that will trace DeSantis’ 44 years and his journey from baseball, the U.S. Navy, and Congress to being one of the most influential governors in the country.

According to Fox News, the book will also detail DeSantis’ childhood, his academic career and his service in the Navy after he volunteered in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

“Ron is a fighter. He defended liberties & livelihoods in the wake of unrelenting attacks. He embodies courageous, principled leadership, which is why FL re-elected him with a 20pt win. This book will inspire more people to join the fight,” celebrated on Twitter his wife Casey, noted as one of the governor’s closest advisors.

The book’s summary says that it is “a winning blueprint for patriots across the country. And it is a rallying cry for every American who wishes to preserve our liberties.”

An autobiography is often synonymous with presidential ambitions

With Donald Trump already on board the 2024 train, many speculate that, if DeSantis were to get on as well, he would be a tough competitor for the former president. However, until the book announcement, the governor had stayed out of the speculation.

The truth is that releasing an autobiography is in the handbook for presidential candidates. In other words, if a person publishes a hopeful book less than 3 years before a presidential election, chances are he or she intends to put his or her name on the list.

For example, in the 2020 Democratic primaries, this requirement was covered by Joe Biden, Julian Castro, Michael Bennett, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Tim Ryan, John Delaney, Pete Buttigieg, Tulsi Gabbard, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson, and Andrew Yang.

And on the GOP’s side, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina published their autobiographies before the 2016 Republican primaries.

The governor will have the difficult task of outselling Barack Obama, who “knocked it out of the park” with The Audacity of Hope, released prior to his successful 2008 presidential run.

Once on the market, it will be DeSantis’ second published book, following Dreams From Our Founding Fathers, which, interestingly, came out a year before his first run for Congress.
