Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, charged against the immigration policies of his counterpart, President Joe Biden, assuring that these generated a greater flow of migrants that are now causing a border crisis in the territory that divides the USA and Mexico.

In recent weeks, the wave of migrants has been so large that the facilities at the southern border were completely overflowing. According to national security expert David Grantham, border agents are not enough to deal with the crisis, since for the first time such a large flow of people is being seen in this border area.

AMLO’s statements

President AMLO, uneasy about the situation, criticized the Biden administration for its treatment of migrants and its open borders policy.

“Expectations were created that with the Government of President Biden there would be a better treatment of migrants. And this has caused Central American migrants, and also from our country, wanting to cross the border thinking that it is easier to do so.”

AMLO’s comment, in short, was a direct criticism of the current administration’s decision to change several of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

For example, Biden decided to relax restrictions for asylum seekers and also eliminated the “safe third country” agreement, which allowed asylum seekers to stay in another country (such as Mexico) while they completed their paperwork to enter the US.

Between AMLO and Trump there were many political and ideological differences. In spite of this, they managed to establish good commercial and diplomatic relations. In that sense, the Mexican president made a call to the American authorities to support the development of Central America because, he argues, this way the massive migration could be stopped.

“People do not go to the United States for pleasure, they go out of necessity,” said López Obrador. “We have to support the development of Central America and southern Mexico. Especially Central America.”

According to Fox News, American officials are “scheduled to meet with their counterparts in Mexico and Guatemala to discuss how best to address the border crisis.”

Reuters, on the other hand, states that there have already been talks between U.S. and Mexican officials to evaluate how to address the flow of migrants. However, there are no official comments.

The news agency reported that Biden “sent envoys here, including his border coordinator Roberta Jacobson, to Mexico to discuss how to tackle a recent jump in migrant arrivals at the U.S. border that have put the new Democratic administration under mounting pressure.”

It is worth noting that Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) called “for the rights of migrants be respected during the new enforcement push, in which security forces are employing drones and night vision goggles to catch people entering the country,” reported Reuters.

On March 22, Project Veritas posted a video — later censored by Twitter — showing a series of photographs inside a migrant detention center in Donna, Texas. The material denounced that at least 50 people tested positive for coronavirus at the facility, where some 3,000 people are held. In addition, they assured that there were “multiple sexual assaults, normal assaults and daily medical emergencies”.

Security experts say this is a border crisis

“In the United States, we have never experienced this level of migration at one time. And there is no sign of it stopping,” said David Grantham in an exclusive interview with El American.

“This is a national security problem, a regional security problem, because lax policy encourages cartels and people smugglers to advertise their business. People come because they believe they will gain entry into the United States. Smugglers offer their services more frequently because they believe they will also be successful. All of this encourages illicit activity, victimizes the needy, and endangers Latin American communities,” Grantham explained of the border crisis caused in large part by the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies.

It is important to mention that the Biden administration is not listening to the call of Republican Party legislators who are asking for a border crisis to be declared.

At the same time, Republicans are calling on the federal government to tighten immigration restrictions in response to the border crisis.

According to CBS News, more than 15,000 unaccompanied migrant minors are in custody in federal facilities. As a result, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas commented during the week that the southern border is closed. He also explained that the Biden administration has no plans to remove unaccompanied minors crossing the border.
