German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her solidarity for Israel in the face of Hamas attacks in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which she also called for an end to the violence.
“PM Netanyahu spoke by phone with Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, who reiterated Germany’s unequivocal support for #Israel’s right to defend itself,” the official State of Israel account wrote on Monday.
Like other countries, such as the United States, Merkel assured that Israel has the right to defend itself. Netanyahu also maintained that Hamas is committing a double war crime by firing rockets from populated areas and “using civilians as human shields.”
Other countries show solidarity for Israel
Merkel’s position coincides with that of President Biden, who said on Wednesday that Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas attacks. The statements were made at a press conference where he was asked about the situation in the Middle East.
He also indicated that members of his government are in contact with their counterparts in the Middle East. He also said he hoped it would be resolved soon.
“Israel has the right to defend itself when you have thousands of rockets flying towards your territory,” the president said.
