Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and one of the key men on the White House coronavirus task force, was questioned by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) regarding allegations and recent reports linking him to funding a study conducted by the Wuhan Institute of Virology that may have triggered the origin of COVID-19.
COVID-19 origin may be due to lab error
On May 7, 2021, a column entitled “China, Fauci, and the Origins of COVID” appeared in The Wall Street Journal. The article asks the question, “Did the virus come from a Chinese lab funded by the famous U.S. government institute?”
The article is very clear explaining that, most likely, the origin of COVID-19 is due to a laboratory accident in Wuhan which would disprove the theory of origin by bats implying a natural jump of the virus to humans.
“Before COVID-19 ravaged the world, Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases funded coronavirus research that included work at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology,” reads the Wall Streert Journal article signed by James Freeman, co-author of the book The Cost: Trump, China and American Revival.
“The idea [of the research] was to study the ability of such viruses to attack humans, but could a Fauci-funded experiment actually be the source of the deadly global infection? In an exhaustive account of the viral possibilities published this week by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Nicholas Wade argues that the Chinese lab is the most likely source of the world-wide agony.”
Wade wrote in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists that virologists at Wuhan carried out a dangerous “gain of function” that sought to “understand what changes needed to occur in a bat virus’s spike proteins before it could infect people”
Wade explains that, “Researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, led by China’s leading expert on bat viruses, Shi Zheng-li or ‘Bat Lady,’ mounted frequent expeditions to the bat-infested caves of Yunnan in southern China and collected around a hundred different bat coronaviruses.”
The analysis claims that Dr. “Shi then teamed up with Ralph S. Baric, an eminent coronavirus researcher at the University of North Carolina. Their work focused on enhancing the ability of bat viruses to attack humans so as to ‘examine’ the emergence potential (that is, the potential to infect humans) of circulating bat CoVs [coronaviruses].”
What Wade explains throughout his analysis is that there is a greater chance that COVID-19 developed through laboratory error rather than cross-species, animal-to-human jumping by the virus. The report points out that several members of the scientific community expressed concern when the bat studies were being conducted in China because the Wuhan Institute of Virology does not meet the minimum biosafety requirements to conduct this type of research safely.
An excerpt from the e-book Chaos Under Heaven: Trump, Xi, and the Battle for the Twenty-First Century, adapted in an article for Politico, denounces exactly the same case as Wade and, in addition, reveals that in 2017 American ambassadorial representatives sent diplomatic cables warning about the risks of experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The article notes that in late 2017, “senior health officials and scientists from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing attended a conference in the Chinese capital.” On that trip, they “saw the presentation of a new study produced by a group of Chinese scientists, including several from the Wuhan lab, in collaboration with the U.S. National Institutes of Health.”
Josh Rogin, a decorated Washington Post columnist and author of the Ebook, explained that since the outbreak of the SARS virus in 2002, “cientists around the world have been looking for ways to predict and limit future outbreaks of similar diseases.” To achieve this, various health institutions, such as the National Institute of Health (NIH), funded projects involving scientists from the Wuhan Institute of Virology “including much of the Wuhan lab’s work with bat coronaviruses.”
The origin of COVID-19 remains an unknown. One problem is that the Chinese regime has systematically prevented an independent investigation of the Wuhan Institute of Virology. In April 2021, scientists from around the world rejected the WHO’s January 2021 inquiry as allegedly tainted by the Xi Jinping government.
The WHO director himself, the United States together with 14 countries and the European Union denounced China for concealing data on the origin of COVID-19 and the pandemic in general.
Fauci’s link to the origin of COVID-19
Wade explains in his article that, in “a strange twist in the story,” the work of the “bat lady,” Dr. Shi Zheng-li, “was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). And grant proposals that funded her work, which are a matter of public record, specify exactly what she planned to do with the money.”
Because of this story, Senator Rand Paul strongly questioned Dr. Fauci, accusing the NIH of funding the Wuhan Institute of Virology; Fauci flatly denied it.
“You are entirely and completely incorrect,,” the scientist told the Republican senator. “The NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan Institute.”
“Government defenders of gain of function such as yourself, say that COVID-19 mutations were random and not designed by man,’ the Republican senator from Kentucky said. ‘Could you rule out a laboratory escape? The answer in this case is probably not. Will you in front of this group categorically say that the COVID-19 could not have occurred through serial passage in a laboratory.”
“I do not have any accounting of what the Chinese may have done and I’m fully in favor of any further investigation of what went on in China,’ Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said. — ‘However I will repeat again, the NIH and NIAD categorically has not funded gain of function research to be conducted in the Wuhan Institute.”
