The Arab League on Thursday welcomed the Biden administration’s announcement on the reopening of a consulate for the Palestinians in Jerusalem, after its closure following the Trump administration’s move of the American Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018.

In a statement, the secretary general of this body, Ahmed Abuelgeit, considered this decision as “an important step towards strengthening relations” between Washington and the Palestinians.

According to the release, Abuelgeit said the reopening “rectifies a mistake” made by the previous administration, when it closed the consulate, “which has been for decades a diplomatic bridge between the United States and Palestine.”

“The move reflects a positive approach on the part of the current American Administration,” headed by Joe Biden, “especially with respect to the clear recognition of the two-state solution as the only way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the note said.

On the 25th, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that his government would reopen a consulate for Palestinians in Jerusalem.

This decision came during Blinken’s tour of the Middle East to address the recent truce that ended the escalation of war between Israel and Palestinian militias in Gaza, after eleven days of violence that cost the lives of more than 253 Palestinians in the Strip and 12 Israelis.

The Biden administration has shown itself to be less aligned with the interests of its historical partner, Israel. In fact, in the last joint press conference between Netanyahu and Blinken, the Israeli leader declared that it would be a mistake to return to the nuclear deal with Iran that was scrapped by Trump, and which the new administration intends to re-sign in order to lift sanctions on Iran and allow its financing.
