Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s leading infectious disease expert and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) — one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH) — finds himself in the middle of several controversies. Recent revelations point to the NIH as funders of the controversial gain-of-function and another experiment that involved drugging and enclosing the heads of dogs in mesh cages filled with insects that then ate the animals.

The trouble for Anthony Fauci began on Oct. 20, when Lawrence A. Tabak, principal deputy director of the National Institutes of Health, in a letter to Rep. James Comer (R-KY) confirmed that the NIH did fund gain-of-function in bats through the EcoHealth Alliance organization.

Gain-of-function is a dangerous experiment that involves genetically altering viruses by making them more contagious and potent so that they can be tested in humanized guinea pigs. As the origin of COVID-19 has not yet been identified, some hypotheses point out that, from this gain-of-function — carried out by the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) — the coronavirus that caused the pandemic could have arisen through a laboratory accident.

Fauci told ABC News that it is “molecularly impossible” that the U.S.-funded bat research in China caused the pandemic. However, it is a theory that has not been thoroughly investigated and is causing curiosity within the scientific community, especially since the theory of natural interspecies jumping has not yet been proven and because of the unwillingness to seriously investigate the experiments conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who has been highly critical of Anthony Fauci on other occasions, seized on Tabak’s letter to accuse the scientist of lying to Congress during hearings held last May and June and, in addition, to call for his dismissal.

“He [Fauci] should be fired,” Paul said in an interview with Axios published Sunday. He continued, “just lack of judgment, if nothing else.”

After calling for his dismissal, Axios reporter Mike Allen told the Republican senator that it was highly unlikely that the Biden administration would fire Fauci. Paul responded that, at the very least, Congress should investigate everything related to the gain-of-function.

Anthony Fauci is not only being hounded by voices calling for his dismissal, but also by those calling directly for his arrest. Following Tabak’s letter, White Coat Waste Project revealed through an investigation that the NIH funded organizations that injected and force-fed dogs with an experimental drug for several weeks. These animals were put in crates to be eaten by insects for scientific purposes.

The outrage on social media against Fauci, who was already widely criticized for “lying” about gain-of-function, intensified causing the hashtag #ArrestFauci to go viral.

“#ArrestFauci He funded gain of function and he funded cruel treatment of innocent dogs. He’s an evil doctor and a despicable person,” posted one of the many outraged users on Twitter.

Other users evidenced how Fauci was exposed by Tabak’s letter, showing that the doctor, last May, had admitted modest funding to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but that they did not put any money toward gain-of-function.

#ArrestFauci quickly went viral on Twitter.

The #ArrestFauci went so viral that conservative media outlets in the United States, such as The Daily Wire and Fox News, began to give coverage to the trend. Even international media outlets, such as Sky News Australia, ran stories on the hashtag.

#ArrestFauci also transcended border and linguistic barriers, as Fauci was not only criticized in the United States, but also began to be questioned by Hispanic users on social networks.

The infectious disease expert has become a highly criticized global figure by those who think that his recommendations and opinions are not based on science, but on political issues and state bureaucracy.
