Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed to death today while attending to citizens in his constituency in Essex (southeast England), police said.

Essex Police said a man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing at a church in the town of Leigh-on-Sea, where the MP was killed.

The incident occurred where Amess was attending, as he did every Friday, to the citizens of his Southend West constituency.

“A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed in Leigh-on-Sea,” said a statement from Essex law enforcement.

Police added that the injured man was treated by emergency services, but, “sadly, died at the scene.”

“A 25-year-old man was quickly arrested for alleged murder after officers arrived on the scene, and a knife has been recovered,” the note added, noting that security forces are not looking for anyone else in connection with this attack.

The 69-year-old MP, who held a knighthood, had been a member of parliament since 1983.

Politicians have already begun to condemn the attack on their colleague, while the British Prime Minister, the Conservative Boris Johnson, has suspended a meeting with his ministers.

Former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith said on Twitter that “this aggressive and violent behavior cannot be tolerated in politics or any other aspect of life.”
