At least 53 people have been killed in shelling attributed to Russian troops in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv in the last 24 hours, reported Vyacheslav Chaus, head of the State Administration of that region in a message on Facebook reported by Ukrinform agency.

“The enemy is exposing the city to systemic artillery and airstrikes, destroying the civilian infrastructure of Chernihiv,” the regional official said.

“In the last 24 hours, 53 bodies of victims killed by the Russians have been taken to the morgue,” Chaus specified.

Despite the continued shelling, teams of electricians and other utility workers are constantly working in the city, he added.

They are trying to restore electricity, gas, and water supplies that have been severely damaged by the ongoing shelling. Chaus advised all those sheltering in places where there is no water and food to go for help to Ukrainian military centers.

The regional official also recalled yesterday’s incident in the city when, he said, at least 13 people were killed when a group of citizens queuing at a supermarket to buy bread were attacked by Russians.
