With just five days left before the deadline for Joe Biden’s administration to evacuate all Americans from Afghanistan, terrorist attacks are looming over the Kabul airport, leaving at least 13 American soldiers and dozens of civilians dead.

Since the U.S. began withdrawing its troops, the Kabul airport has become the main air and escape bridge for thousands of citizens seeking to flee the Taliban. Although more than 95,700 people have been evacuated, there are still Americans, Afghans and thousands of other nationalities waiting to be rescued.

This Thursday, August 26, a double explosion took place at the airport gate. There were three suicide bombings. The first was at Abbey Gate, the place where most of the people trying to flee have crossed. The second was in the vicinity of the Baron Hotel. The details of the third were unknown at the time of this publication.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed the “complex attack” and reported that Americans and civilians were among the victims. For their part, the Taliban also reported at least 13 dead in the attack, including several of their guards and minors.

In recent hours, several countries have halted the evacuation process, which they had planned to complete this Friday, citing “credible threats” of attacks. It remains to be seen what will be the reaction of the Biden administration, which promised to evacuate all the nationals before the deadline of August 31.

In the early hours of Thursday, August 26, the United States issued a warning for Americans to “immediately leave several airport gates” citing security threats.

According to CNN, officials are alarmed by a “very specific stream of threats” from the terrorist group ISIS, which planned to attack crowds outside the airfield.

As the deadline for evacuating all Americans approaches, the Democratic administration fears that the Taliban or enemy groups will again attack those who have not yet been rescued.

A source familiar with the situation told CNN that it is estimated that at least 150 American citizens in Afghanistan have not been able to reach the airport to be evacuated. He further reports that thousands of Afghan translators who collaborated with the U.S. will most likely not be able to be rescued, which would mean a death sentence for them.

Taliban regime holds U.S. accountable

A tweet from Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for Afghanistan’s now ruling Taliban regime, condemned the attack and held the United States responsible for security at the site.

“The Islamic Emirate strongly condemns the bombing of civilians at Kabul airport, which took place in an area where American forces are responsible for security. The Islamic Emirate is paying close attention to the safety and security of its people, and the evil circles will be strictly stopped,” he said.

Americans in Afghanistan: will successful evacuation become mission impossible?

The recent terrorist attacks come as no surprise to the world. In fact, intelligence specialists already warned that they could happen and claim that rescuing all Americans is becoming mission impossible.

We must remember Biden’s words: “There is no way to evacuate all those people without pain. A lot can go wrong,” said the president, who previously acknowledged the possibility of a terrorist attack in the vicinity of the airfield.

David Grantham, an American war veteran who in 2006 served as a U.S. Air Force counterintelligence officer in Afghanistan, told El American that now, in the home stretch, “the violence will escalate.”

“Taliban is hedging their beats that the U.S. will not respond militarily and will allow terrorist groups to conduct tactical attacks to ensure the U.S. keeps to its deadline,” the veteran noted. He added that at this point the Taliban “don’t see the U.S. as a threat.”

“Afghans will not stop trying to leave the country after the U.S. pulls out. Meanwhile, the Taliban will stop permitting people to leave under threat of death or death itself,” Grantham said.

The veteran predicts that without any outside intervention the world will see a massive migration crisis: “We could be on the cusp of Civil War in the country or extreme violence.”

Evacuating without contemplating consequences

Joe Biden has received countless criticisms for the way he withdrew troops from Afghanistan without measuring consequences.

In a statement issued last Thursday, Aug. 19, former President Donald Trump suggested a timeline for the evacuation that he believed would have been safe to safeguard all American citizens in Afghanistan.

Trump said that American citizens should have been evacuated first, and then brought back the entire “team.” He then pointed out that after the U.S. left, the bases that housed foreign troops for years should have been bombed.

“First, you bring out all of the American citizens. Then you bring out ALL equipment. Then you bomb the bases into smithereens—AND THEN YOU BRING OUT THE MILITARY. You don’t do it in reverse order, like Biden and our woke Generals did. No chaos, no death—they wouldn’t even know we left!” said the former commander-in-chief.
