A baby was discovered in a garbage early on January 19 in Jackson, Tennessee, and police are now looking into the incident.
The newborn was discovered inside a trash at 33 Carter Street at 3:30 a.m., according to a Facebook post by the city’s police department, which received a report about the incident. The youngster was taken urgently to the hospital, where he is now undergoing treatment.
“I can’t imagine feeling so desperate, that you feel this is your only option. I’m so thankful to the person that called 9-1-1 and to JPD for their swift actions in saving this baby’s life,” Mayor of Jackson Matt Conger said, also via Facebook.
Police Chief Thom Corley commended all the first responders who helped save the youngster during a news conference last Friday.
“I’m absolutely convinced that if it were not for the joint efforts of these first responders and medical personnel, this newborn baby in this case would not have survived,” “… I’d like to publicly thank the community for the outpouring of thoughts and prayers for the child involved in this case, and I personally want to request those prayers continue. He’s got a long road ahead.”
Corley also mentioned that the mother of the child had been located and was receiving medical attention. The reason for the abandonment is being looked into.
Every state has a safe haven statute designed to prevent parents from abandoning their babies in emergency situations, as occurred in this case. Tennessee permits moms to turn over their newborns at fire stations, police stations, or hospitals during the first two weeks of birth without worrying about facing legal repercussions.
A Safe Haven Baby Box will also soon reside in the city. The Safe Haven Baby Box group offers temperature-controlled boxes at safe haven locations so that parents may give a kid up discreetly. They have “boxes” all around the US.
The municipal council signed a contract with the group, according to a Facebook post by Mayor Conger, and only last week, an order for a new baby box was made.
