A delegation of some 40 Bareini officials arrived in Israel on Tuesday for a two-day visit, during which economic exchanges and tourism development will be discussed among the new partners in the region.

After the United Arab Emirates, Barein normalized its relations with Israel last September, following mediation by the Trump administration, which would involve in particular the opening of an Israeli embassy in the Gulf country and vice versa.

The Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabi Ashkenazi, had planned to visit Baréin this week, but the trip was cancelled, diplomatic sources told AFP, without giving details about the reasons for that decision, taken after the assassination of an Iranian scientist from the nuclear sector that Iran attributes to Mossad, the Israeli foreign intelligence service.

Instead, the Bareini delegation with some 40 members, led by Zayed ben Rached Al Zayani, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, arrived this Tuesday at noon in Tel Aviv to hold talks with Israeli officials, local diplomatic sources confirmed.

On the agenda will be economic cooperation, in which the technology sector is Israel’s calling card, and also tourism, to continue the delegation’s talks on Wednesday with Ashkenazi and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli authorities did not inform whether this Bareini representation will visit the Esplanade of the Mosques, the third holiest place in Islam, located in the eastern part of Jerusalem.

Many Palestinians, hostile to the normalization of relations between Israel and Arab countries, are opposed to a possible visit to the esplanade, including Al Aqsa Mosque, by officials from the Emirates and Bahrain.

In theory, however, the Waqf, the body that manages Muslim holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem, cannot deny its faithful access to these sites.
