The Biden Administration opened a new detention center for unaccompanied immigrant children following the border crisis caused by the new Democratic immigration policies.
This was announced on Monday by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and noted that the facility opened its doors this Sunday in the city of Midland, in the state of Texas.
“The immediate need for the emergency intake site is a result of the rapid increase in the rate of referrals of unaccompanied minors from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) for care,” HHS said in a statement.
The location, considered a temporary measure, seeks to provide “a safer, less crowded environment where children are cared for and processed as quickly as possible and will be released to a sponsor or transferred to an ORR foster care facility for long-term care.”
The center, operated jointly by the American Red Cross, contractors and federal personnel, will provide permanency facilities for the children, access to medical services and implement a COVID-19 screening protocol.
According to CBS News, more than 4,200 unaccompanied immigrant children remained as of Sunday in short-term Border Patrol detention facilities, including some unfit to hold minors.
The release indicated that more than 3,000 young immigrants under the care of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) -of which the Border Patrol is part of- had exceeded the 72-hour deadline provided by law for them to be turned over to ORR, which is tasked with caring for refugees in the country.
Since Biden took office, the entry of unaccompanied minors has skyrocketed and triggered the alarms of those who are already talking about a new crisis at the border.
The flow is such that Biden has had to resort to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support HHS.
Border apprehension numbers reached record lows during the administration of now former President Donald Trump, with the number of deportees also dropping by almost half compared to the numbers of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama. Today, just a couple of weeks after Biden took office, a new immigration crisis has been unleashed.
