The Biden administration will admit about 25,000 asylum seekers who were waiting in Mexico while U.S. immigration courts processed their applications under an order from former President Donald Trump.
The new order will go into effect on February 19th, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who said that “the U.S. government is committed to rebuilding a secure, orderly and humane immigration system.”
The official assured that they will soon announce a virtual registration process. “Individuals should take no action at this time and should remain where they are to await further instructions,” he emphasized.
Homeland Security also warned migrants that the announcement “should not be interpreted as an opportunity for people to migrate irregularly to the United States.”
“Eligible individuals may only enter through designated ports of entry at designated times,” he added.
The announcement terminates the Migration Protection Protocol, also known as “Remain in Mexico,” approved in 2019 for asylum seekers to wait across the border while judges give an answer to their applications.
Trump justified that policy by the need to curb abuses of the system such as some migrants never showing up when their cases called.
