In the midst of the immigration crisis at the southern border, President Joe Biden stressed on Friday the need to pass immigration reform for the United States to strengthen its economy and win the competition against countries such as China.

Biden addressed the issue of immigration reform at a naturalization ceremony at the White House, in which 21 immigrants became U.S. citizens, including three from Colombia, El Salvador, and Panama.

“We need an immigration system that reflects our values while enforcing our laws. We can do both,” Biden said.

Shortly before the president’s remarks, Texas Governor Greg Abbott noted during an appearance on Fox News that Biden is not enforcing the law, “which has led to a dramatic increase in crime and human trafficking on the southern border.”

“Texas will uphold the rule of law, protect the border and help stop this crisis,” he added.

For her part, Irene Armendariz-Jackson, Republican candidate for Congress, considered that Biden’s policies on immigration do not solve the border crisis that affects hundreds of citizens.

“Joe Biden’s entire immigration policy is an unsustainable joke,” she said on Twitter.

Migration reform comes amid a crisis

Since the beginning of the year, the United States has been facing an immigration crisis, after Biden lifted the measures that former President Donald Trump had promoted.

At the beginning of April, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that migrant arrests at the border reached their highest level in 20 years.

On May 14, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich had called on Biden to replace Kamala Harris as “border czar” on the grounds that the vice president has ignored the border crisis since the position was announced.

Brnovich said Harris has made no effort to implement measures to address the effects of the immigration crisis and has shown little interest in observing what is happening on the southern border.
