Joe Biden’s government authorized the transfer of its first three prisoners out of the Guantánamo naval base in Cuba, although it is still unknown where they will go and when.

These three prisoners will join six others who have Washington’s approval to leave Guantánamo but have been waiting for years for the transfer, which must be to another country.

In total, only 40 of the nearly 800 inmates who were held at the naval base after its opening in 2002, ordered by then President George W. Bush in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, remain at the base.

The other 31 inmates are awaiting trial or are considered too dangerous to be released.

The three new inmates authorized for transfer are Pakistani Saifullah Paracha, 73; Pakistani Abdul Rabbani, 54; and Yemeni Uthman Abdul al-Rahim Uthman, 40.

The authorization has not yet been published by the government, but the prisoners have been informed according to their lawyers, who have also received confirmation from officials on condition of anonymity.
