U.S. President Joe Biden sent a congratulatory letter on Sunday on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of the Constitution Day of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, where he celebrates the bond that the island has with the United States and how intertwined its history is.

“I am pleased to join you in commemorating the 69th anniversary of the adoption of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Constitution Day. For over a century, the people of Puerto Rico have made great contributions to the noble causes of democracy and freedom that are embodied in the island’s constitution,” Biden began.

In the text, Biden described as “vital” Puerto Rico’s representation in the American people, contributing countless times “in civil rights, science, industry, education and the arts, which are woven woven into the fabric of American history”

The president also highlighted those Puerto Ricans who have served in the U.S. military, as well as paid his respects to those patriots who have fallen in battle.

“Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to the generations of Puerto Ricans who have participated in every major U.S. military operation since the First World War. These military patriots will always be revered and their sacrifices remembered,” he said in the letter.

“Today, more than eight million Boricuas – more than five million in the continental United States and more than three million on the island – participate in every facet of American life. Puerto Ricans enrich American culture, identity and vision, and help shape a more diverse and vibrant Nation,” he added.

In closing, Biden highlighted in the letter to commemorate Constitution Day those who “have faced and overcome adversity,” stressing that “the people of La Isla del Encanto bend; they do not break.”

“Inspired by Puerto Rico’s strength and commitment to democracy, our nation proudly joins you in commemorating this Constitution Day,” he concluded.
