On Tuesday, President Joe Biden called on undocumented minors and families in the latest wave of immigration to the United States to stay in their home countries.

“Don’t come (to the United States). Don’t leave your town, city or community,” Biden said in an interview with ABC News to be aired Wednesday, but of which the network previewed parts.

This was the message Biden gave to the surge of unaccompanied minors who in recent weeks are crossing undocumented from Mexico into U.S. territory despite the closing of the border due to pandemic restrictions.

The White House is facing increasing pressure to respond to the situation of the thousands of undocumented minors who are in detention centers of the border authorities or in shelters of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

According to CBS News, more than 4,200 unaccompanied immigrant children remained as of Sunday in short-term Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detention facilities, including some unfit to house minors.

Faced with this situation, Biden sent earlier this month a large delegation of his advisors to visit the border in the state of Texas and has taken several measures, such as mobilizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for 90 days to care for the minors.

However, the White House has resisted describing the situation at the border with the word “crisis”; Republicans have visited the border and insist that it is a “challenge” and a “big problem.”

Asked Tuesday by reporters, Biden ruled out visiting “for now” the border with Mexico.
