During the election campaign, Joe Biden promised to reverse Trump’s migration policies with measures that would supposedly reclaim “the migrant identity of the country.” After his promises, the number of migrants at the border increased and now Biden turns his back on migrants; he asks them “not to come” because they will be sent back.

Biden criticized Donald Trump countless times for the construction of the wall that divides the border between Mexico and the United States, the former Republican president’s order to build the wall was even described as racist; however, today, after five months in office, Biden decided to build his “psychological wall” against migrants: he tells them that if they arrive in U.S. territory they will be sent back.

Biden turns his backs on migrants

In a few words, the measures that Biden criticized Trump for are now much more radical, since the order is no longer like Trump’s that allowed asylum seekers to stay in Mexico waiting for a response; now the order is simply: “do not come.”

According to the law in the United States, anyone who presents themselves at a land border or airport has the right to seek asylum and make their case before a judge; however Harris’ call is to publicly deny that right beforehand.

“Do not come to the United States, we will be tightening laws and security,” Harris said from Guatemala.

Harris’ words now, do not coincide with what Biden proposed in his government plan where he explicitly stated that he will “welcome immigrants into our communities” and “reaffirm the United States’ commitment to asylum seekers and refugees.”

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, have criticized the Democratic administration for the crisis generated at the southern border of the United States.

Following Harris’ visit to Guatemala, Giammattei asserted that the Biden administration’s “unclear” message on immigration fueled the border surge.

They said they were going to support family reunification,” Giammattei said, referring to the Biden administration’s policy of allowing unaccompanied minors to enter the United States on humanitarian grounds and seeking to unite them with family members in the United States.

“Then the coyotes came and took the children and teenagers to the United States,” he said. “And the border became crowded. Not just with people from Guatemala, but with a lot of people.”

“That’s why we’ve suggested that the message be clear,” the president said.

Biden reversed Trump’s migration policies

Biden’s reversal of Donald Trump’s migration policies caused a flood of illegal migrants at the U.S. border. The crisis is such that the Democratic leader was forced to appoint Harris of the situation at the border.

While the Biden administration has said that the border is not open and that most asylum seekers are being turned away at the border, the administration is allowing unaccompanied minors into the country, a policy that may be contributing to the sharp increase in children traveling alone.
