President Joe Biden on Friday nominated former Florida senator and space enthusiast Bill Nelson as NASA administrator, a choice that must now be approved by the upper chamber.
Nelson, who maintains a good relationship with the President and whom he supported in his presidential campaign, will lead NASA at a time when the aerospace agency is preparing a mission to send the first woman and the next man to the moon, and with an eye on establishing a permanent base on its surface.
In 1986, the former Democratic senator gained notoriety when he spent six days in space aboard the space shuttle Columbia while a member of the House Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
