President Joe Biden departed Wednesday on his first international trip to the United Kingdom to participate in the G7 summit, the first stop on his European tour that will take him to meet with European partners in Brussels and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva.

Biden took off from Andrews Air Force Base, just outside Washington, in the presidential plane shortly before 9.00 local time (14.00 GMT), accompanied by his wife, the first lady, Jill Biden.

Tonight, the president’s plane is scheduled to land in Cornwall (the United Kingdom), where on Thursday he will meet with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson before participating, starting Friday, in the three-day G7 summit.

Before Cornwall, Biden will make his first stop in the United Kingdom, at the Mildenhal base, where he will give a speech to the American troops stationed there.

The recovery from the pandemic, the fight against the climate crisis or the hegemony of China are some of the topics that will be on the agenda of the meeting of this elite group of the most industrialized countries (United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan).

The next stop on the Biden Europe tour will be Brussels, where he will attend the NATO summit on June 14 to “reaffirm America’s commitment” to the Atlantic Alliance.

A day later he will express his commitment to European allies at a meeting between the U.S. and the European Union (EU), which will focus on securing the global health care system, stimulating economic recovery and combating climate change.

Finally, he will travel to Geneva, Switzerland, where on June 16 he will hold his highly anticipated meeting with Putin, the first between the two since Biden came to the White House.

The United States has said that it seeks a “predictable relationship with Russia” and that it intends to lower the temperature between the two, marked by disagreements over the sovereignty of Ukraine and the wave of cyber-attacks allegedly launched from Russian territory.
