The Biden administration opened its first detention center for migrant children in the face of the crisis reached at the U.S. southern border.

The Daily Wire reports that Biden reactivated an emergency facility that was open for a month in 2019 and has the capacity to hold up to 700 children between the ages of 13 and 17.

Two years ago Carrizo Springs, Texas, had a large tent that functioned as a dining hall and assembly area, while minors were housed in dormitories with bunk beds and tables. The reopening of the facility includes some changes implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

The portal cites a report from The Washington Post which states that the camp is necessary because “facilities for migrant children have had to reduce their capacity by nearly half due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, the number of unaccompanied children crossing the border has been slowly increasing.”

There are currently around 7,000 migrant children in its custody spread across multiple facilities.

The move has been criticized on social media. Users reject the way the stories were framed. In addition, they pointed out that the media and left-wing activists often claimed that the Trump administration had children in “cages” while the Biden administration reactivates detention centers under another campaign.
