Inflación, El American

President Joe Biden said Wednesday morning that his administration received “news” that inflation for the month of July was “zero” 0%. However, according to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), prices rose 1.3% over last month and inflation stood at 8.5%.

“I just want to say a number: zero”, President Biden said. “Today we received news that our economy had zero percent inflation in the month of July”.

The truth about inflation

The President’s words seem celebratory, regardless of the fact that annualized inflation during the month of June reached a record 9.1%, the highest figure in the last 40 years.

It is worth noting that, despite a generalized increase in food prices and some services and a base inflation of 5.9%, the annualized figure for July decreased due to a minimal reduction in gasoline and diesel prices which, in turn, results from an overall decrease in oil prices.

As explained by El American: “The cost of gasoline decreased by 7.7% during the month of July, after peaking at over $9 a gallon. The reduction in fuel prices in the United States has been mainly due to the drop in the price of oil”.

Biden’s victorious cry immediately generated reactions.

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz referred to Biden’s remarks as “ridiculous BS” and “cruel gaslighting”.

Comedian and columnist Tim Young said: “FACT CHECK: TOTAL FUCKING LIE”.

Broadcaster and analyst Clay Travis noted: “They lie so brazenly it’s incredible”.

Tennessee Republican Senator Martha Blackburn said that in Joe Biden’s America, “men are women, and 8.5 % inflation = 0 % inflation”.

The LIBRE Initiative’s president, Daniel Garza, used a reference from the 50s movie classic, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: “What’s that smell in this room? Didn’t you notice it, Brick? Didn’t you notice a powerful and obnoxious odor of mendacity in this room?”.

Georgia Republican Congressman Barry Loudermilk merely tweeted one fact: “Before Biden took office, inflation was 1.4%. Today, inflation is 8.5%”.

The social media team at the conservative Daily Wire reacted with two jokes. The first is a comparison of the Biden administration celebrating a minimal reduction in inflation. The second is a reference to the silence of independent “fact checkers”, who have not fact-checked the president.
