President Joe Biden closed 2021 with a new crisis framed by the COVID-19 test shortage. Pharmacy chains like Walgreens or big box stores like Walmart are limiting sales of the tests as demand increases.

Biden and his team, who repeatedly promised that more COVID-19 tests would be available, now admit that the virus overtook them creating a new shortage.

Biden told governors in a virtual meeting Monday that his administration should have done more to speed up the availability of the rapid tests.

Biden admits he didn’t do “enough” to prevent the COVID-19 test shortages

“It’s not enough. It’s clearly not enough. If we had known, we would have gone harder, quicker if we could have,” the president said, referring to the Omicron variant that has quickly overwhelmed existing testing capacity.

“Seeing how tough it was for some folks to get a test this weekend shows that we have more work to do,” he added.

The frustrating quest for COVID-19 testing endured by many Americans may also have a political consequence for Biden, who has seen his approval ratings plummet to record lows, especially after White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki scoffed at the idea of sending a test to all Americans.

“It’s really embarrassing that we don’t have the amount of evidence we need to be able to use it as the robust containment tool that we know it to be when used effectively,” Dr. Chris Pernell, a public health physician and fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine, told CNN.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, admitted Monday that the testing situation could be better, despite constant warnings from experts for months that it is not expansive enough.

“Testing has always been a problem,” Fauci told CNN, adding that the situation had been exacerbated by hordes of Americans wanting to travel during the vacations.

“It’s been a very, very strong pressure on the testing campaign (…) that’s not an excuse for it: we should have had more testing available. But hopefully now, as we go into the first two weeks of January, it will be much improved,” he added.
