Joe Biden has elected Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education. Cardona is a former public school teacher and current supervisor of all educational centers in the state of Connecticut, media reported Tuesday.

With Cardona’s appointment, which has not yet been made official, Biden would fulfill the promise of electing a teacher as Secretary of the Department of Education.

“It will be a teacher, I promise,” Biden told America’s leading teacher’s union, the National Education Association (NEA), in July 2019.

In addition, in a letter sent to Biden last week, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus supported Cardona’s appointment, who had already been touted as a candidate.

Cardona, born in Connecticut to Puerto Rican parents, has served since 2019 as that state’s education secretary, a position from which he has had to oversee the distance learning of thousands of students due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, when schools closed their doors, Cardona rushed to deliver 100,000 laptops to students in his state to make sure they could keep up with classes.

Previously, Cardona was a teacher in a public school in the Meriden District, CT, where he grew up, and then served for ten years as the district’s education director, overseeing the education of 9,000 students, which, in 2012, earned him recognition as the best principal of the year.

Pending the official announcement of his appointment, Biden continues to draw his future Cabinet, which already includes Antony Blinken as Secretary of State, Janet Yellen as Secretary of the Treasury and Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security.

The president-elect has also nominated Hispanic Xavier Becerra as Secretary of the HHS, Lloyd Austin as head of the Pentagon, Avril Haines for DNI and Linda Thomas-Greenfield as Ambassador to the United Nations.

Of the remaining departments to be selected, the DOJ is the highest level, a position that Biden’s office may not name before Christmas, a source familiar with the internal debate in the transition group told CNN Tuesday.
