Daniel Ortega is the dictator of Nicaragua; he has been in power for 14 consecutive years with absolute control over politics and military forces. This Sunday, November 7, there will be “elections” in the Central American country and Ortega has imprisoned the seven opposition candidates. The RENACER Act sought to help the Nicaraguan people achieve freedom and protect America from the threat posed by these narco-communist regimes in Latin America.
The bill, entitled Reinforcing Nicaragua’s Adherence to Conditions for Electoral Reform (RENACER) Act, has already passed the House of Representatives and the Senate. However, the White House has made an unexpected and inexplicable decision, it will not enact the law that was expected to be passed this Friday before the supposed elections.
The reason given by the White House is an insult to our intelligence. According to Voice of America broadcaster, a senior White House official stated that “the signature will not change what they have already done, which is to steal the elections”. Therefore, the president will not sign the RENACER bill in order “not to distract from what will be a clear abuse of power.”
El American spoke with Representative María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) — one of the leaders of this Act — about President Biden’s decision: “I am absolutely speechless. After months of hard work by me and my colleagues in Congress — and above all, by the people of Nicaragua who have suffered through this nightmare — the Biden Administration refuses to sign RENACER in time for elections.”
Regarding the President’s actions on international policy, the Congresswoman stated that “the Administration’s Latin America policy has been a failure from the start. Time and again they fail to act. They are changing the role of the United States from the guardian of democracy to a spectator of its downfall.”
The RENACER bill proposes new ways to track the Ortega dictatorship’s corruption and to monitor and record human rights abuses committed by the dictator. The bill would also have the United States increase sanctions against key actors in the Ortega regime. RENACER also contains a policy to review Nicaragua’s participation in the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement.
RENACER is not only important for Nicaragua’s freedom, but it also has implications for U.S. security. The law provides for increased intelligence reporting on Russian activities in the Central American country. Enemies of the United States partner with leftist dictatorships in Latin America to expand their power and attack this country in a variety of ways.
Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) has also argued that the bill will provide the Biden administration with the diplomatic tools necessary to help stabilize the electoral crisis in Nicaragua.
Meanwhile, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has stated that “our bipartisan bill requires sanctions against officials in the Ortega regime and a full investigation into the money the Nicaraguan Armed Forces have invested in the United States.”
