President Joe Biden confirmed Wednesday that he will send additional assistance to Ukraine that would reportedly include a small number of medium-range, high-tech rocket systems to assist the European ally in its war against Russia in the Donbass region.

“Today, I am announcing a significant new security assistance package to provide timely and critical aid to the Ukrainian military,” Biden’s official statement said. “Thanks to the additional funding for Ukraine, passed with overwhelmingly bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress, the United States will be able to keep providing Ukraine with more of the weapons that they are using so effectively to repel Russian attacks.”

According to the press release, the assistance shipment includes a HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) missile system with battlefield ammunition.

“The people of Ukraine continue to inspire the world with their courage and resolve as they fight bravely to defend their country and their democracy against Russian aggression,” the president also said. “The United States will stand with our Ukrainian partners and continue to provide Ukraine with weapons and equipment to defend itself.”

Biden doubles down on Ukraine

According to the Wall Street Journal, the guided rocket system that Biden will send to Ukraine is capable of hitting targets from a distance of more than 40 miles, doubling the range of M777 howitzers previously sent.

On Tuesday, the New York Times published an article in which Biden said that the invasion of Ukraine will end through diplomatic action, but that the U.S. will provide weapons as a way to influence negotiations in favor of the Ukrainians.

“That’s why I’ve decided that we will provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine,” Biden said in the article.
