President Joe Biden evoked memories of his late son, former Delaware attorney general and military reservist, Beau Biden, and said he had “lost his life in Iraq.”

Beau Biden died in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2015 after a long battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“Just imagine — I mean it sincerely — I say this as a father of a man who won the Bronze Star, the conspicuous service medal, and lost his life in Iraq,” the president said in Colorado Wednesday during an event declaring the Camp Hale Continental Divide a national memorial. “Imagine the courage, the daring, and the genuine sacrifice — genuine sacrifice they all made.”

Biden’s oldest son served as a reservist in the Delaware Army National Guard and received a Bronze Star for his service in Iraq. However, his death took place years after the end of his service in the war.

In 2013, Beau Biden was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Two years later, after going through chemotherapy and radiation treatment that only kept the cancer in remission, he was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, where he died on May 30, 2015.
