The U.S. bombing carried out on Thursday against alleged pro-Iranian militias in eastern Syria, targeted an “uninhabited” area and caused one death in the ranks of the Arab country’s army, a Syrian military source told EFE.
The source, who requested anonymity, asserted that the projectiles launched by the US aircraft hit an uninhabited area near a position belonging to one of the Iranian forces operating in the region of Abu Kamal”, in Deir al Zur, on the border with Iraq.
He also specified that one Syrian soldier was killed and three Iranian fighters were wounded in the action, although the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had previously claimed 22 dead from the Iranian-backed Iraqi militias Popular Multitude and Kataib Hezbollah.
The information channels of Kataib Hezbollah, a militia integrated in the Iraqi pro-government group Popular Multitude, confirmed the death of one of its fighters “in the U.S. air strike.”
According to the Observatory, based in the United Kingdom and with a wide network of collaborators on the ground, the bombing, the first since the arrival of Joe Biden to the U.S. Presidency, targeted positions of these groups and a shipment of weapons that had just crossed the border from Iraq.
The Pentagon explained that this action is the response to recent attacks against American troops and those of the international coalition fighting the Jihadist group Islamic State in Iraq, as well as “continuous threats” against these personnel.
Ten days ago a U.S. soldier was wounded and a contractor was killed in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, after being hit by several projectiles, three of them at the capital’s airport.
