President Joe Biden will announce this Wednesday during his speech at the United Nations, 2.9 billion dollars in foreign aid for food.

According to the White House, these 2.9 billion dollars will be directed to projects for food insecure children in African and Asian countries and will also be aimed at helping small farmers with new technologies and tools, among other measures.

The assistance to be announced by Biden is in addition to the $6.9 billion his government has already allocated this year to food security projects around the world.

The war in Ukraine has greatly exacerbated the food crisis in many impoverished or developing countries, which have seen the prices of basic foodstuffs rise and have been unable to access wheat and other commodities exported by Ukraine for months.

The UN and Turkey succeeded in July in getting Ukraine and Russia to reach a pact to create a safe sea corridor for exporting grain from Black Sea ports.

Despite this agreement, the United Nations has warned that there is a risk of famine in places such as Yemen, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Nigeria, and Afghanistan and, for this reason, the issue of food security has become one of the central themes of the General Assembly with the aim of preventing this threat from becoming a reality.
