President Joe Biden will meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican on October 29, as part of a tour that will take him to Rome for the G20 summit and to Glasgow (United Kingdom) for the COP26 climate conference in early November, the White House announced Thursday.

According to the official statement, Biden will discuss with Francis how to “work together” to “end the COVID-19 pandemic, address climate change and care for the poor.”

It will be the first face-to-face meeting with the pope for Biden, the first Catholic President of the United States since John F. Kennedy (1961-1963).

The G20 leaders’ summit will be held Oct. 30-31 in the capital of Italy, the country chairing the group this year.

There it is expected, although it has not yet been officially confirmed, that the president will have a bilateral meeting with the French president, Emmanuel Macron, after the anger provoked in France by the defense alliance between the United States, United Kingdom and Australia that involved the cancellation of a multi-million dollar order of French submarines by Canberra.

Biden will then travel to Glasgow for the COP26 climate summit on November 1-2.
