Joe Biden spoke out after the Nashville shooting, in which a 28-year-old transgender man killed six people. In addition to vehemently condemning the event, his response went viral because of the opening. Seconds after taking the podium, he joked, to some in an unfortunate way, about how much he likes chocolate ice cream.

The president participated on Monday in an event organized by the White House, which highlighted the presence of entrepreneurial women. Before referring to the shooting at a Christian school in Nashville, Biden made some jokes that included his taste for ice cream.

“My name is Joe Biden. I’m Dr. Jill Biden’s husband. And I eat Jeni’s ice cream — chocolate chip. I came down because I heard there was chocolate chip ice cream,” he began his speech. “By the way, I have a whole refrigerator full upstairs. You think I’m kidding? I’m not,” he added.

Some users on social networks described the comment as unfortunate, since minutes later he referred to such a sensitive issue as the aforementioned shooting, in which a woman who self-perceived as a man shot down six people, three of them 9-year-old children.

“It’s sick. It’s heartbreaking. A family’s worst nightmare,” the president said of the shooting. “We have to do more to stop gun violence; it’s ripping our communities apart — ripping the soul of this nation,” added Biden, who has yet to make a decision on whether or not to run in 2024.

The shooter, a former student at the school, entered the school with two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun. “And we have to do more to protect our schools, so they aren’t turned into prisons,” Biden said and then called on Congress to ban assault weapons.

“The police department response was swift. Officers entered the first story of the school and began clearing it. They heard shots coming from the second level and they went toward the gunfire. When the officers got to the second level, they saw a shooter, a female, who was firing. The officers engaged her, and she was fatally shot by responding police officers,” said a local law enforcement official.

Six victims have been identified, including three children aged 9 years and three adults aged 60 years and older.
