Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Tuesday the Copa America will take place in brazil after the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) confirmed that Argentina and Colombia withdrew from organizing the tournament.

“I was consulted by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and on our side, the answer is positive,” Bolsonaro said at the gates of his official residence in Brasilia.

“There is Copa Libertadores, there is Copa Sudamericana, and there will be matches of the regional qualifiers” for the World Cup in Qatar, Bolsonaro said in relation to tournaments that have been underway for months.

“Nobody says anything about that, but if it’s the Copa America then it’s going to cause crowds and can’t be played,” he noted ironically, to insist that his government is willing to host the tournament of national teams in the region, which would start next 13th.

“It is the same protocol (security) of the Copa Libertadores,” insisted Bolsonaro.

Shortly after, in an official act at the Planalto Presidential Palace, the president assured that he has the support of his entire cabinet, including the Ministry of Health, for the holding of the tournament in Brazilian territory.

“All my ministers are in favor of the Copa América in Brazil with the same protocol of the qualifiers (for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar) and the Libertadores. Case closed”, he said.
