On Thursday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro used the last debate before Sunday’s presidential elections in Brazil to mention a murder that embarrassed former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his main rival, whom he accused of having been the mastermind behind it.
Bolsonaro used recent statements made by a senator that once again implicated Lula in the case to claim that the progressive leader was the mastermind behind the 2002 assassination of the then mayor of the city of Santo André, Celso Daniel.
According to Bolsonaro, Lula was the main beneficiary of the assassination.
Celso Daniel, an important leader of the Workers’ Party (PT), the party founded and led by Lula, was assassinated in 2002 in a crime initially attributed to militants of that political party opposed to the mayor’s decision to fight and denounce corruption.
