BRAZIL President Jair Bolsonaro attended the first debate on Sunday ahead of the elections on 2 October, after being uncertain about his participation until the last minute.

Bolsonaro promised to expose the corruption in the government of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (his main rival in the elections).

He then spoke about the polarisation in the elections: “God, Homeland, Family and Freedom. I am sorry for the other candidates, but the elections are polarised. Who did the ex-convict (Lula da Silva) support in the past? He supported Chavez, he supported Maduro, where did Venezuela go? Today we receive more than 500 people (Venezuelans) a day in Pacaraima, fleeing hunger, misery, violence, weighing on average 15 kg less, and Lula supported those candidacies.”

Bolsonaro also had words for the rest of the countries in the nation:

“Look at where Argentina’s economy is going. The president of Argentina, before assuming the presidency, visited Lula in Curitiba, in prison, and Lula supported him in Argentina. Today, 40% of the Argentinean population is on the poverty line. Lula also supported the president of Chile, the same president who used to practice arson in the subway. Where is our Chile going? Lula also supported Petro in Colombia. His measures: release of narcotics, release of prisoners, where is our Colombia heading?”.

Finally, Bolsonaro also had words for the repression in Nicaragua:

“Our dear President Lula also supported Ortega in Nicaragua, who is persecuting Christians, arresting priests and expelling nuns. A massive religious persecution. And when asked about this, he says: we should not stick our noses into other countries. What will happen to our Brazil if this ex-convict returns to the scene of the crime together with Geraldo Alckmin, a religious man, a Catholic, but who decided to sing the Socialist International? It is the union of all that is useless in Brazil. We don’t deserve this for our country” —he said.
