Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro went to the birthday of influential pastor Silas Malafaia on Thursday to call evangelical voters, who are one of his main support bases, to the polls.

Bolsonaro defended conservative values during a brief speech on the occasion of Malafaia’s 64th birthday celebration, which took place in a packed Assembly of God church located in Penha, a poor neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro.

“There are things that are highly valued by all of us: (the fight against) abortion, drugs, gender ideology; private property and family,” said the conservative leader before an audience of thousands of evangelical faithful.

The ruler, who in the October 2 elections has as his main adversary former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, standard-bearer of a coalition of socialist parties, said he was “certain that good will end up defeating evil.”

Malafaia, a pastor so close to Bolsonaro that he married him in 2013 to his current wife, Michelle, tucked the candidate in a fiery speech.

The pastor lashed out against the “filth of socialism” and stressed that in the elections, evangelicals do not defend a candidate, but “principles and values.”
