Border Crisis: Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham Warn Mayorkas of Potential Impeachment

The border crisis does not stop. As a result, pressure is mounting for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to address the situation.

This Thursday, it was learned that Senators Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham warned Mayorkas about the possibility of facing impeachment if he does not change the strategy on the border.

In a letter to Mayorkas, obtained by Fox News, Republicans showed data released by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealing that the crisis at the southern border has worsened since Mayorkas took office 19 months ago.

“This is gross dereliction of duty and, if not corrected swiftly, could provide grounds for impeachment”, wrote the senators.

They added, “Your failure to faithfully enforce this nation’s immigration laws and willful blindness to the very real humanitarian crisis at our southern border amounts to a gross dereliction of duty and a violation of your oath of office.”

“Despite the heroic efforts by the men and women of Border Patrol, who operate with very little support from Washington, D.C., you have failed to achieve any semblance of operational control of the southern border,” they added.

El American calls for Mayorkas’ removal from office

In August, El American’s editorial board called for Mayorkas’ removal as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security for his inability to control the border crisis.

“The facts speak for themselves. More than 3.1 million illegal immigrants have been apprehended by border authorities since Biden took office, and more than 800,000 have evaded capture; a number considerably higher than the number apprehended during the entire Trump administration. Meanwhile, the two million illegal crossings in 2021 represent a record, more than five times the number that crossed in the previous year,” the editorial explains.

It also details how the crisis has deepened since Mayorkas took office. “Under Alejandro Mayorkas’ watch there have also been at least 1,000 reported deaths along the southern border. Last month, 53 migrants, including dozens of women and children, died under extreme heat exposure when they were locked by human smugglers in a truck without air conditioning.”

And, finally, it adds: “Republicans will be able to #ImpeachMayorkas if they regain control of Congress later this year, but that’s too long to wait. Right now, Congress has a responsibility to act against this cynical, incompetent and dishonest political actor.”
