A judge of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court ordered Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (former Brazilian president and current candidate) on Wednesday to withdraw the videos in which he calls Jair Bolsonaro (the current president also running for re-election) “genocidal”.

The precautionary decision was taken by magistrate Raul Araújo, who accepted an appeal filed by Bolsonaro’s conservative Liberal Party (PL) against “gross imputations” by the leader of the Workers’ Party (PT).

The ruling refers to the speech given by Lula last July 22 in a political act in the Garanhuns City, the homeland of the former governor (2003-2010), in which he called Bolsonaro “genocidal”, a term he has been using systematically.

This label is also used by other members and groups of the opposition to Bolsonaro’s government, who seek to hold him responsible for the deaths of the covid for political purposes.

Araújo assured that “the participants of the electoral process must orient their conduct in order to avoid hateful and discriminatory speeches, as well as the propagation of false messages or messages that may characterize slander, libel or defamation”.
